Tow Law Prize Show & Sale of Store Cattle & Suckled Calves

Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held their special annual “ Tow Law “ prize Show & Sale of store Cattle & Suckled calves with a catalogued entry of 701 consignors across County Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria.
The pre-sale show was kindly sponsored by Zoetis and ably judged by master Welsh finisher Mr Ben Attewell, Chapel Farm, Caldicot.
Taking the H & H Mews memorial cup for the store Champion, was a black steer from Messrs Short, Ouston, Whitfield, which went on to realise £1180.
The overall sucked calf Champion and taking the Colin Mitchelson Memorial Plate and the Perpetual trophy for the Champion Calf was presented to Messrs Reed & Sons, Lands Farm. Their outstanding black heifer went on to realise £1400.
Messrs Charlton, Whiteside, went on to take Reserve and also sell for £1400.

On the whole, remarkable trade was a touch sharper again, especially for the cattle forward.One of the biggest AA x steers seen in the market from Warden Law sold to £1660. A magnificent run of Charolais x steers from Mr R Oxley, Colwell Hill sold to the same figure and the steers from this home went on to average £1463 for 10 sold.
The Scott lads, Corneyside had a enjoyable trip to Hexham, selling steers to £1600 and heifers to £1500 with the Matfen based family’s run of cattle averaging £1440.
Alan Ogle, Comb Hills sold Limousin x heifers to £1580 and all four of his heifers smashed the £1500 barrier to average £1540.
Younger cattle were just as in demand with Messrs Ballantyne, Cowburn Rigg selling their impressive yearling steers to £1460.
Mr B Watson, Baal Hill sold a 9 month old Limousin x steer to £1270. The Wolsingham based family sold their run of 23, 5-9 month old calves to an impressive £1000.

Cast Ewes
Another large entry of 1773 ewes and rams sold to an expected trade, with vendors returning happy.
Topping the sale at £170 was a Texel x ewe from Mr D F Brodie, Chesters.
Not far behind at £165 was another Texel ewe, this time from Messrs Cheviot Farming Ltd, Elsdonburn.
Mules topped at £102 from Messrs M W Walton, Rawfoot.
Hill Ewes still proving to be slightly harder to cash with more appearing nationwide.
More wanted to meet the strong demand at Hexham.

Store Lambs
Store lambs sold to another strong trade for the catalogued entry of 6177.
Topping the sale at £138 was a pen of 17 Dutch Texels from Mr B Storey, Woodhead who also sold a pen of 22 at £136.
Messrs Younger & Stamp, Watch Hill sold a pen of 5 smart types at £130.
Suffolk x lambs continue to sell to a tremendous trade topping at £113 for a pen of 13 from Messrs J Herdman, Edlingham Newtown.
Mule lambs continue to sell well to a top of £98 for some Ewe lambs from Peat Gap, with Mules regularly selling for £80 +.
Hill Lambs continue to sell well at Hexham, selling to a top of £84 from Messrs L & B N Urwin, Lynnshield.
