Store Cattle

Hexham And Northern Marts held its weekly catalogued sale of 388 Store Cattle & Suckled Calves, an entry which was predominantly made up of yearling cattle. Trade maintained the previous week’s high rates leaving all vendors extremely satisfied with their days trading.

Older, forward stores met a slightly sharper trade this week. Yearling cattle that would be suitable to turn out to grass continue to be in great demand and easily sold.

Top prices on the day were dominated by an outstanding run of Limousin cross steers aged twelve to fourteen months from brothers Frank & Reg Simpson, Square House. This terrific run peaked at £1990.00 for a fourteen-month-old whilst others sold to £1940.00 & £1900.00 leaving the brothers from Quebec a healthy average of £1770.00.

Another band of brothers saw healthy returns for their Limousin cross bred cattle, this time is was the Burns from Grange Houses who sold another fourteen-month-old steer to £1970.00.

Leading the heifer trade was a Pure British Blue from Mr R Carr, Little Bavington Farm which cashed at £1940.00. Not far behind at £1900.00 was a twenty-one-month-old Charolais cross heifer consigned by Mr W R Webster, East Plenmellor Farm.

As previously mentioned, weaned calves and yearling cattle met a great trade once again with plenty of purchasers still looking to acquire cattle to put to grass.

Mr J P & F Scott, Westburnhope received a terrific trade for their yearling Limousin cross steers and heifers, raised well above the heather line which achieved an eye watering £1800.00 for steers and £1520.00 for heifers leaving an outstanding average of £1447 for the 10 presented.

A marvelous run of 10–12-month Limousin cross steers and heifers were presented by Mr J E Carruthers, Silloans from the top of the Otterburn ranges and sold to a high of £1570.00 for heifers and £1550.00 for steers leaving a very healthy average of £1372 for the 29 forward.

Messrs MD & J Stobbs, High Dalton brought their usual stamp of quality weaned calves and sold a pair of 11-month-old Limousin cross heifers to £1570.00.

Angus bred cattle were once again in high demand here at Hexham, and even selling at the end of the sale, Messrs Featherwood Ptrs, Featherwood sold 11-month-old heifers to £1340.00.

Dairy bred, British Blue yearling bulls consigned by Messrs Gilhespy, Tedcastle went on to cash at £1160.

We are now seeking more young bulls on a weekly basis to fulfill current buyers’ demands.
