Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their special May Term sale of store cattle offered a good catalogued entry of 876 head from noted consignors and drawn from Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria & The Scottish Borders.

As seen previously the best end of all classes continue to sell at great rates through the Hexham ring however with numbers forward across the region and quality on the whole more mixed lesser types are increasingly harder to place.

Trade peaked at £1900 twice; first for a huge Hereford bullock from Messrs Eggleston, Thornham Hill then again later in the sale for a super shapely Limmy Steer from Steven Graham, Miller Hill, Gilsland.

Willie Woodman, Great Chesters brough forward forty more tremendous cattle and peaked at £1880 for a Charolais steer and also sold the dearest heifer on the day, also a charolais cross at £1860.

The youngest class of cattle were equally sought after and peaked at £1300 for both steers and heifers. Messrs Huddlestone, Round Meadows sold a super Limmy heifer at the figure and Messrs Nixon, Longlea sold a great steer at the same price to average a worthy £1110 for 19 steers sold.

With a great crowd at the ringside for the whole sale the entire entry of steers returned at £1217 per head and the heifer portion came back at £1063.  Those with cattle yet to reach the market are urged to contact our auctioneers to discuss entering stock for sale at next weeks sale which is also the monthly special sale for native breed cattle.

Hexham and Northern Marts sold 453 Cast Ewes and Rams at their weekly sale.

Topping the Ewe section was a pen of 4 Texels at £200 from Mr D Barron, New Acres selling to a regular purchaser Mr Jeff Dunn, Ponteland.

Suffolk cross Ewes topped at £162 from Mr J W Watson, South Clarewood.

Mules topped at £133 for a trio from Messrs E V Kenyon & Son, South Farm.

Blackface Ewes peaked at £128 for a pair from Messrs Teasdale, Kellah Farm.

Store Hoggs continue to sell to a strong trade as long as they are a good size, whereas smaller hoggs harder work as the season comes to a close.

Topping the trade was a pair of Dutch Texels at £156 from Messrs B A & A M Storrow & Son, Willimoteswick.
