Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of 695 catalogued store cattle and suckled calves. Once again all classes eagerly competed for with forward stores as dear or possibly a touch sharper. The better end of the continental yearling cattle met an absolute flying trade, seeing returns rarely seen.

Taking the top honours this week was a tremendous Black Limousin cross steer from Messrs J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters that went on to realise £2100.00. Charolais cross steers from the same home went on to sell to £1970.00. Mr E Metcalf, Fairley Farm sold a great run of forward Angus cross cattle to peak at £1960.00.

An outstanding entry of continental cross heifers met a blistering trade selling to a high of £2060.00 from Messrs G H Walton & Sons, Greyside for a 17-month-old Limousin. M W & C M Ridley, Shitlington brought forward an outstanding run of Limousin cross heifers aged 13-15 months that saw a high of £1940.00 with another selling to £1920.00.

Messrs J W Robson & Son, East Shaftoe made an extremely successful trip back to the Hexham ring with thirty Charolais, Beef Shorthorn and Saler cross steers and heifers ranging from 16-18 months. The run peaked at £1910.00 for a Charolais cross steer and Shorntorn steers sold to £1820.00 leaving a health average of £1631.00 throughout.

One of the highlights in the yearling cattle section was the entry of Limousin cross steers from Swarland Limousin breeders, Messrs A & D Proctor, Swarland Old Hall. A delighted Arthur, Diane & Andrew Proctor enjoyed a high of £1660.00 for a black Limousin cross which was sought after right around the sale ring.

Messrs Browell, Quarry House topped the youngest class of cattle with an exceptional Limmy cross heifer at ten months of age which scaled to £1450 and Messrs Proctor followed with another steer at £1440.  A great run of hill-bred calves were brought from The North Tyne by Messrs Walton, Burnbank who saw their steers at 9 & 10 months of age peak at £1240 and heifer sisters cashed at £1200.  The consignment averaged £1120 for 14 bullocks and 7 heifers sold on the day representing a lift of over forty pounds per head on the week.

With the merry month of May just around the corner the buoyant trade seen on a weekly basis here at Hexham will be an attraction for those herdmasters with cattle still to be sold and our auctioneers draw attention to the special sales over the next two weeks. Friday 5th will see the Special May Prize Show & Sale and the following week the traditional May Term Sale will be held, both undoubtedly attracting top quality entries that should be of interest to buyers of all classes.

Contact our auctioneers on 01434 605444 to place your entry.  Please Note – with Bank Holiday Mondays on the 1st & 8th entries will close at 12 Noon for each sale on the 2nd & 9th respectively.
