Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

The first sale after the Easter break saw an entry of 357 catalogued Store Cattle and Suckled Calves. The break for Easter meant purchasers were eager for all classes meaning a great trade throughout.

Older cattle once again cashed extremely easily and were amazingly dearer than they were before Easter. Topping the sale with an outstanding red Limousin cross steer at £2180 was the retiring Messrs S Weightman & Son, East Farm, Seaham, who very kindly donated all the proceeds of the steer to the Marie Curie Charity very kindly purchased by regular supporter Mr Ian Bowe, Quarry House. The same home also sold Limousin cross steers to £2120.

Messrs G R Scott & Son, Corneyside brought their usual quality home bred Limousin cross cattle and sold an outstanding pair of black steers to £2040.00.

Two further beasts met the £2000 mark, firstly a Charolais cross steer from Messrs Walker Bros, Satley and then just after a British blue cross steer from Mr John Coxon, Park Head.

Leading the heifer trade was Messrs Scott & Son, Corneyside who cashed Limousin crosses to £1930 and £1880.00.

Thick Blonde cross heifers from Messrs P & PM Walker, Houselop Grange sold to £1870.00 whilst a strong contingent of Parthenais cross heifers from Mr J Sisterson, Newlands Heugh peaked at £1820.00.

Even with it being a week before the designated native week, forward Angus heifers were in real demand and Mr Sisterson became the beneficiary and sold heifers to £1770.00 and £1720.00. Hereford cross heifers from Mr A Parker, High Wooley were in real demand and sold to £1600.00.

More older, forward stores can easily be sold here at Hexham with the trade seen with the older store cattle averaging a mesmerising £1468.38 throughout for both beef and dairy bred cattle.

Younger cattle saw a healthy lift on recent previous weeks with it becoming closer to turn out time. Topping the yearling cattle section was a great run of Angus cross beasts from Messrs F Hall & Sons, East Butsfield who sold heifers to £1600.00.

Ten-month-old Angus cross steers from J R Nevin & Son, Parkside sold to a high of £1350.00. Limousin cross steers of the same age from Messrs T Hutchinson & Sons, Lee Hall peaked at £1240.00 and £1230.00.

A reminder that included in next weeks sale is the monthly sale of Native Cattle. Auctioneers are keen for your entries. Please feel free to contact Chris on 07808721957 and Drew on 07854361967 on the office on Monday morning 01434 605444.
