Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of 402 catalogued Store Cattle and Suckled Calves. A fabulous entry of cattle throughout met terrific returns, which once again were sharper on the week for all classes.

Store cattle average saw a lift of £32 to level at £1456 with steers averaging £1554 seeing a high of £2150.00 for a Limousin cross steer from regular Hexham vendors Messrs H Clark & Son, Paxton Dene. The same home sold a homebred Blue cross steer to £2140.00.

Older Angus cross steers were extremely easily cashed and sold to £1940.00 from Messrs Burn & Son, Aydonshields. 

A fantastic run of middle-aged cattle was seen today, with the Charolais breed well represented throughout. Making the successful trip down from Midlothian was Ross Farms, Wester Middleton, who sold 16-month-old bullocks to £1850 and £1800. Messrs J & P Armstrong, Sherburn Tower sold steers of the same age to £1665.

Messrs A & C L Bell, Woodhall Farm sold thirteen-month-old British Blue cross steers to £1430.00.

Dairy sorts sold extremely well with M/s RJS & DM Addison, Greystone House making the trip from Penrith to sell Flekvieh steers to realise £1400.00.

Store Heifers went on the average £1314 right through and peaked at £1920 twice for a Limousin cross consigned by Messrs W Walton & Sons, Ogle Castle and then a Blonde cross from Messrs R English & Son, Brownsleazes.

Charolais cross heifers were in real demand again, and sold to £1755.00 from Mr J Sisterson, Newlands Haugh. Messrs J Herdman, Edlingham Newtown brought their usual stamp of quality Charolais cross cattle and sold heifers to £1640.

Angus cross heifers from Messrs P Featherstone & Son, Allendale Farm sold to £1690 and £1680. Whilst middle aged Angus cross heifers out of the dairy mother from Messsrs Forster, Brackenthwaite, Brampton, Cumbria, sold to £1240.00.

The youngest class of Suckled calves and “weanlings” amazingly, saw a lift on last weeks returns and averaged £1235, compared to last weeks £1086.  Messrs D & S Robinson, Hawksteel brought their first offering of the season of quality Limousin bred cattle and sold 10 month old steers to realise £1445.00. Heifer calves sold to a whopping £1430.00 for a beauty from Graham & Gemma Common, Low Ardley.

A mention must go to an outstanding run of seventeen 9-10 month old Limousin cross steers and heifers from Messrs TR & EA Milburn, Wallend Farm, Brampton that sold to £1310 for steers and £1325 for heifers but averaged £1274 straight through.

Young Bulls once again easily sold here at Hexham and more could have been sold to vendors advantage. Messrs J & P Armstrong, Sherburn Tower sold Limousin cross bulls to £1330 & £1300.

Cast Ewes

Hexham and Northern Marts sold 978 Cast Ewes & Rams to a firmer trade, good, well fleshed ewes in demand, however medium strength ewes slightly harder to place.

Messrs W S Robson & Co, Yatesfield topped the sale with a tremendous Pure Texel Ewe at £245 and again at £215 for another terrific Texel Ewe.

Outstanding Hexham type Blackface ewes known for the size and strength

topped £109 for a pen of 13 from J Hunter & Son, The Steel. Another great run of Blackface ewes from Messrs W S Robson & Co, Yatesfield  sold some terrific Ewes to £109. Followed by several others hitting above the £90 mark.

A strong Leicester ewe topped at £137 again from Messrs W S Robson & Co, Yatesfield.

A striking penful of Half Bred ewes went on to return £139 from Messrs S Shell & Sons, Brandon.

Suffolk crosses peaked at £142 for a well fleshed ewe from returning vendor Mr E T Turnbull, Haredene.

Good Mules peaked at a good price of £125 for a pen of 7 from Messrs J B Cowan, Morrowfield.

Store Lambs

A good show of hoggs forward (2510 catalogued) including a number of quality pens sold to the regular buyers plus extra customers ringside.

All classes good to sell and sharper on the week. Top price was for a pen of Beltex crosses from Blakelaw at £120 with Dutch Texels from Craigshield at the same money.

Top price for Suffolk crosses was Morrowfield who has pens at £115 & £112.

Texel crosses topped at £109 from Bavington Hill Head & Donkin Rigg with Bavington Hill Head also selling at £108 & £107.50.
