Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their last sale of store cattle in the month of June and offered a reduced catalogue, which is common at this time of year, of ninety-six head ranging from ten to thirty-three months of age.

Despite grassland and other operations taking precedence a good crowd were at the ringside and the best end of older cattle continued at recent rates with trade for younger types suited to further grazing perhaps easing somewhat on the week.

Leading the sale was a huge Limousin cross steer at 17 months of age from Alf & John Marr, Old Ravensworth that changed hands at £1860.  This was followed by another similar sort at £1840 from Paxton Greenshields, The Byre and another again from Messrs Marr at £1810.  Messrs Walker Bros, Satley Farm completed the quartet of bullocks that sold at or over £1800 with a seldom seen breed from Satley; a Saler cross bullock at 20 months that sold for exactly that figure.

Heifers made up just a third of the catalogue on the day and peaked at £1570 twice – both well-bred Limmy cross ladies at 22 months of age from Messrs Herdman, Lunns House.  Brian Charlton, East Newham followed with two sharp, smart Limousin cross sorts at 20 months that would ultimately make ideal butchers heifers which cashed at £1560 and £1480 for the delighted Ponteland producer of note.

Richard Hodgson, Redsteads brought forward another smart packet of ‘coastal cattle’ from Howick and completed his seasons trading at Hexham with a useful packet of predominantly yearling heifers that scaled to £1330 for a hefty Charolais cross and to £1240 for a useful black Angus beauty to average a very worthy £1251 for nine females sold on the day.

Producers with cattle still to sell are urged to contact our auctioneers who will be delighted to advise on the best method and juncture at which to market your stock for optimum return. Entries for next weeks sale are invited by 11am on Monday, 3rd July and should be made with the Mart Offices on 01434 605444.
