Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their first store stock sale of June and offered 298 catalogued head of suckler bred store cattle.  As is typical at this time of year numbers forward were fewer than of late but trade showed little sign of easing.

The sale peaked at £1880 for a hefty Angus cross steer from regular supporter John Carpenter, Rare Dene, Cornsay, County Durham followed by another at £1860; this one a trademark Blonde D’Aquitaine cross from noted Tow Law purveyors Messrs Walker, Houselope Grange.  The female trade peaked at £1710 for a square and weighty Charolais cross heifer from The Telfer Brothers – David & Andrew, Make-me-Rich Farm, Capheaton.

Cattle in the middle age bracket were once again sought after despite a smaller crowd at the ringside with shearing and grassland operations now taking precedence.  Philip Walker continued his blistering trade to top this class with another super Blonde steer at £1700 and sold four to average £1767 per head.

A more mixed show of younger aged calves was presented and yet the best end of these displayed top quality breeding. Trade for younger sorts peaked at £1520 for a simply sublime Limmy cross heifer at 9 months with shape and style ‘forever’ from Andy Thompson, East Unthank, Haltwhistle who saw his five calves return at £1364 average per head.

David Walton presented a typically cracking penful of behalf of his family from Greyside, Newbrough and these topped at £1600 for a steer at 14 months and with their lead heifer at £1480 went on to average £1382 for eleven and nine sold on the day.

James Thompson, Springwell Cottage further cemented the outstanding reputation of County Durham bred cattle sold through the ring here at Hexham topping at £1510 for a stylish bullock in the same class and with another at £1490 then averaged a worthy £1430 for ten steers sold from the noted enterprise alongside the A68 near Tow Law.

Our auctioneers are actively seeking cattle which are yet to be marketed this year and urge producers to contact us to discuss how we can help your business.  Customers attention is drawn to the monthly sale of beef breeding cattle next week and NSA North Sheep next Wednesday, 7th June at Bradford Farm, Belsay where Hexham & Northern Marts are delighted to be Mainline Sponsors and we will be delighted to welcome all customers – old and new to our hospitality stand throughout the day.
