Hexham Store Cattle & Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their weekly sale of store cattle which included the monthly special sale of native breed cattle and offered for sale 510 head.

With a considerable entry of continental cross cattle trade continued at the current level seen recently through the Hexham ring.  Outwith show cattle, or those selected for breeding in recent weeks a huge commercial Charolais cross bullock topped the sale from Messrs Ellis, Thrunton Lowfield, Alnwick at £1700.

A super run of cattle were presented by Martin White, Steel Hall, Hexham and topped at £1680 for steers and £1580 for heifers and averaged a worthy £1428 for nine sold.

On the native breed day Angus cross cattle topped at £1530 for a tremendous steer from Philip Tomlinson, Sunniside who averaged £1423 for eight hefty bullocks sold whilst Messrs Burn, Aydonshields topped at £1300 for a smart black heifer selling three that levelled at £1246.  Equally happy with the trade on the day were Messrs Armstrong, Grasslees for their run of twenty black Angus cross bullocks and much improved on the year these peaked at £1410 and averaged £1211 throughout; a rise of almost £200 per head.

Blue Grey cattle peaked at £1190, twice from Cartington farm, Thropton whilst Beef Shorthorn steers sold to £1160 from Messrs Dodd & Wise, Sillywrea and Hereford crosses topped at £1040 for a smart steer from Philip Dickinson, Rugley Walls.

Demand remains strong for all classes at Hexham and the auctioneers would be keen to hear from any producers, both local and distant that may have cattle to release onto the market in the coming weeks.
