May Prize Show & Sale of Store Cattle& Suckled Calves & Store Sheep

Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of 851 store cattle and suckled calves which this week included the Special May prize show and sale which was kindly sponsored by Stoneacre Motor Group. Judging the show this year was Lincolnshire producer Mr Clive Goulsbra who tapped out the British Blue steer class winner from Messrs R W Harding & Son, West End Town who went on to sell for £1500.00. Reserve went to a Charolais cross heifer from Messrs M & TF Graham, West Foreshield which went on to sell for £1580.00 to the judge.
The entry of older cattle section this week can only be described as varied in quality. The better sorts still sold well with the plainer sorts slightly easier. Twenty month old commercial bullocks from Messrs J Thompson & Sons, Springwell Cottage Farm sold to a high of £2000.00. Twenty six month old Pure Limousin heifers from Messrs J & F Hartley & Son, Low Shipley sold to a high of £1640 twice. Older native bred cattle sold well once again with Mr H D Hutchinson, Hollin Close selling eighteen month old steers to £1600.00. Luing bullocks from Messrs Stanners, Low Chesterhope sold to a high of £1590.00.
As with the older cattle, a mixed entry of younger cattle this week, with the better end selling very well with many long distance purchasers going home with half-filled wagons. The plainer sorts as with the older beasts, slightly harder to cash this week compared to last week. One the highlights of the sale was a lovely run of 50 Limousin and British Blue cross steers and heifers from Messrs Rochester and Murray, Glebe Farm, with yearling steers selling to £1900.00 and yearling Limousin heifers selling to £1480. Another highlight was the annual consignment of 75 yearling limousin cross steers and heifers from Messrs Lewis Forster & Son, West Nubbock which peaked at £1630 for steers and £1480 for heifers.
Eleven month old steers peaked at £1650.00 for a fantastic black Limousin steer from Messrs E Telfer & Son, High House. Messrs TR & EA Milburn, Wallend had another successful trip to Hexham with a lovely run of 9-11 month suckled calves that sold to £1380.00 for Limousin cross heifers and averaged £1219.00 for 15 sold.
Messrs G W & C Athey & Son, High Love Lady Shield, proved a late turn didn’t hamper trade, selling their usual stamp of Limousin cross cattle to a high of £1430.00 for 14 month old steers. This was then beaten by a sister from this stable that sold to £1520.00 leaaving the Atheys with a healthy average of £1316.67 for 15 sold.
We are actively seeking more cattle for next weeks’ “May Term Sale” and ask potential vendors to enter cattle before 10:30am Monday morning.
