Hexham & Northern Marts held their weekly catalogued sale of 216 Store Cattle & Suckled Calves from the North of England and Scottish Borders. A varied entry of cattle this week with something for everybody on offer. Cattle once again maintained last week’s blistering trade with stronger cattle especially in demand. At the other end of the spectrum, dairy bred stirks also seemed to be sought after.
Today’s top prices were dominated by the females with the highest grossing animal today was an outstanding black Limousin cross heifer from Low Middleton Livestock, Low Middleton, Berwick which after some furious bidding ended up at £1660.00 heading to a top end finisher in Yorkshire. Messrs Marr of Old Ravensworth Farm, Gateshead sold a thirteen month old Limousin cross heifer to £1595.00.
Messrs Ogle, Blackburn once again brought their usual stamp of quality forward steers which this week sold to £1590.00 and £1580.00. Another North Northumbrian producer coming down the A1, taking advantage of the Hexham ring was Messrs Hutchinson, Kettleburn who sold Charolais cross steers to £1540.00 twice. The £1500 barrier was broken eleven times throughout today’s trading.
Native bred cattle once again sold well with Angus cross steers from Messrs Featherson & Son, Allendale Farm selling to a high of £1480. Angus cross heifers sold to a high of £1390.00 from Messrs White, East Uppertown.
Suckled calves were simply on fire once again through Ring One with a pen of three, Ten month old Limousin cross steers from David & Sharon Robinson, Hawksteel selling to £1290.00. Eight month old Limousin cross heifers from Nilston Rigg Farms went on to sell to a high of £970.00.

Hexham and Northern Marts sold 1136 Cast Ewes and Rams to a strong trade with lean types dearer on the week.
Topping the sale at £230 was a pen of four Texel ewes from P A & E J Lawson, Middleton Mill House.
Not far behind was a Charolais ewe at £200 from Drapestown who also sold Suffolk cross ewes to £166.
A pen of nine Bluefaced Leicester ewes sold to £148 from Messrs K Smith & Son, East Greenridge.
Mules topped at £125 from Thomas Telford, Pasture Hill.
Blackface ewes sold to £106 from Mr J Proctor, New Dotland.
More wanted to meet the strong demand at Hexham with 12 active buyers ringside today.
