Bellingham Prize Show & Sale of Spring Born Calves

Hexham & Northern Marts held their traditional ‘Bellingham’ sale of spring born suckled calves and offered a great catalogued entry of 925 head from noted suckler herd masters from across the region.

Prior to the sale the prize show was held and generously sponsored by Carrs-Billington, Zoetis Animal Health and The British Limousin Cattle Society and expertly judge by Mr Daffyd Lewis, Lampeter, Ceredigion, Wales.  A super entry of twenty-six calves were presented before the judge and from his initial awards he arrived at his Overall Champion, a tremendously correct  red Limousin cross steer from father and son John & Mark Emmerson, Haggate, Weardale, County Durham.  Standing as reserve was a long, sweet red heifer from another family team Eric & Mark Armstrong, Harlow Bower, Whitfield and the judge commented that there was very little between the two animals on the day favouring the steer with the Championship sash and The Michael Walton Trophy.  Prize list as follows;

Champion – J Emerson, Haggate – Limousin cross steer

Reserve Champion – T C E Armstrong, Harlow Bower – Limousin cross heifer

Best Pen of Four Calves; 1st – J R G Johnson, West Wharmley (Charx steers)

2nd – Featherwood Partners, Featherwood (Limx steers)

Limx Steer; 1st Haggate, 2nd Haggate

Limx Heifer; 1st Harlow Bower, 2nd Haggate

Other Contx Steer; 1st Morley Hill (BBx), 2nd West Wharmley (Charx)

Other Contx Heifer; 1st West Wharmley (Charx), 2nd Morley Hill (BBx)

The company would like to thank all exhibitors, our judge and sponsors without whom such an occasion could not take place.

Whilst a slow spring meant many consignments were hardly as forward as last year a super entry of calves from all quarters sold well across the board and the sale average saw a modest lift on the year with three-quarter bred calves experiencing a similar trade to that seen 12 months ago whilst harder, hill bred types were reported by many to have lifted by as much as £60-£70 per head on the year.

Once again the heifer entry saw the peak of the trade with the reserve champion jointly topping the sale at £2000 alongside another correct heifer from Harlow Bower.  Messrs Armstrong also sold another female calf at £1750 and a heifer sister to the champion from Messrs Emerson, Haggate sold to £1360.

Top end steer trade was as hot as ever and the lead consignment was undoubtedly that from Jonathan Craggs, Glower-oer-Him, who sold 6 of the top ten priced steers on the day topped at £1260 twice and these six averaged £1196.  The Champion calf from Haggate sold to a worthy £1250 and Messrs Lee, Morley Hill sold the dearest Blue cross Steer at £1245.

The Charolais sired calves in the sale saw renewed interest and topped at £1130 for well-bred steers from Richard Johnson, West Wharmley with heifers peaking at £1000 from the same noted Tyne Valley producer. A small but select entry of Angus cross calves also sold well on the day peaking at £1000 for the prize winning steer from Edges Green and another selling to £910 from Messrs Hutchinson, Lee Hall.  Messrs Robson, Yatesfield hit £825 for a super pen of five black steers and were delighted with their days trading at Hexham.
