SHEEP ROUND UP WEEK BEGINNING
30 JUNE
2009 Hexham and Northern Marts marketed a total of 1105 prime sheep this week, comprising of 735 lambs and 93 hoggs and ewes at Hexham, and 251 lambs, 6 hoggs and ewes through Scots Gap. Numbers remain lower than this time last year, be aware that there is a strong demand for lambs weighing between 38kg and 42kg, and at present fewer customers for lambs over 43 kilos. The weeks trade began below that at the end of last week and has continued to ease all week with markets in the North of the Country varying between 143p and 155p per kilo, between 5p and 10p above markets in the South. Lack of retail demand remains the major problem together with a less favourable exchange rate restricting the exporters. Hexham again fared well on Tuesday being amongst the highest SQQ averages on the day, (Eblex figures), at 151.61p/kg when the national average levelled at 144.13p and markets in the South averaged as little as 137.5p. Scots Gap was 'Top of the Pops' on Wednesday averaging 155.4p/kg on a day when the national average fell to 142.1p/kg with some markets as low as 139.6p.
